Pugliesi love their baked macaroni casseroles (timballi) and this one is no exception. There are many versions of the dish from this region. It is standard fare for Christmas or other special occasions. Mezzi ziti are a long, hollow type of dried pasta that needs to be broken in half before cooking. If they are unavailable use bucatini, a thick, hollow spaghetti. This recipe is usually made in some type of terra cotta dish but any heavy-duty casserole dish will work.
This recipe was featured on Season 16 - Episode 1601.

Our mother use to make baked macaroni using layers of ziti, sauce, smuched-up meatballs, ending with the layer of sauce. The BEST part
was after cooking everything she would then put the casserole under
the broiler in her oven and crisp up the top! Everyone at dinner would want a part of the topping-it really made the meal!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I made this Timballo dish for guests at Thanksgiving dinner, they ate so much of this pasta, that they did not The turkey for side dishes. I am making again for Christmas Eve, I hope it’s as much of a hit with the family as it was at Thanksgiving with friends! 😌
