Pears in Wine

Pears are in season and a wise choice for healthy eating. A great way to enjoy them is baked in wine, either red or white. Best type of pears for baking include Comice, Bartlett and Anjou are best and all are available supermarkets. Cooking them in wine could not be easier and results great favor.They are even better the next day.

Ingredients

  • 4 not overly ripe pears, cut in half lengthwise and center core and seeds removed
  • 1 1/2 cups red or white wine
  • 1 whole cinnamon stick
  • zest of one large orange
  • 1/2 cup coarse brown sugar
  • pinch salt

Directions

  1. Place the pear halves cut side down in a single layer in a casserole dish
  2. In a bowl combine the wine, cinnamon stick, orange zest, sugar and salt.Pour evenly over the pears. Cover the dish with foil and bake at 350F until a knife easily pierces the pears. Serve warm with some of the sauce.
