Ciao Italia Movie Review: Julie and Julia, FOUR STARS!
August 14, 2009

One of the questions I get asked a lot is, What makes a good chef? My answer is always the same: passion. That’s what made Julia Child the queen of television cooking shows. She had passion, and an insatiable curiosity about French food.
Her love of food and of life is captured in a poignant and entertaining way in the movie Julie and Julia, which I just saw. It is a joyous, delicious look at the life of Julia Child as she discovers a world of cuisine that captivates her. Meryl Streep is brilliant as Julia, she captures her voice and her mannerisms perfectly.
Julia never thought of herself as a chef, she was a home cook and she was determined to make French cooking accessible for the home cook. There wasn’t anything she was reluctant to try, from boning and stuffing a duck to making puff pastry. And along the way she made mistakes just like any cook, that’s what made her special.
I give Julie and Julia my highest rating: FOUR STARS! I highly recommend you go and see it.
If you do, though, one word of caution, don’t go hungry! The food preparations and wonderful food photography will leave you feeling oh so famished! And when you leave, you’ll have that urge to run to your kitchen and whip up boeuf bourguigon and toast Julia with a glass of bubbly.
Have you seen the movie? What rating do you give it?
