Location, Location, Location!

February 1, 2008

It may be February but it is time to think vegetable gardening! If you have never had a garden before, here are some tips for getting started. First: location, location, location. You want the garden to be somewhere accessible to your house and in a sunny location.

Once you find that ideal setting then look at the lay of the land; does it slope; is it rocky; are there too many trees shading the area, is water easily available, and is the area big enough for your plans.

Once all of that is checked off your list, dig up a patch of dirt and bring it to your extension service to get a soil analysis; this is very important because it will determine if the soil is good or not, if it has too much clay, is too rocky, does not drain well, and the list goes on.
