Me and Julia

April 4, 2022

I first met Julia Child on the phone when I dared to call this icon of French cooking to pick her brain about an idea that I had for an Italian cooking show that now, in its 30th year of production, is known as Ciao Italia. Her bubbling voice greeted me like I was an old friend and I had so many questions that I did not know where to begin. But one sticks in my mind above all else when I told her what I wanted to do and she blurted out “get a good lawyer!”

Over the years, I was with Julia at many functions and small gatherings and there is no doubt that she was and is the queen of the cooking show genre.

As she grew into her later years, I invited her to our tv studio and it happened to be right around her August birthday, so I decided to make her a cake. The cake was filled with pistachio cream and covered with whipped cream and a ribbon of pistachio fondant. When she walked in, the entire crew sang Happy Birthday and I presented her with the cake. She was delighted but I was nervous that it would not meet her standards: she had two pieces!

All the charm, wisdom, quirkiness and I -can -do-attitude that embodies this culinary cult figure is reinforced on HBO Max ‘s streaming series of  Julia. Bon Appetit!
