The Feast of Saint Joseph

March 19, 2013

Today is March 19, the feast of St. Joseph and a good day to make sfinge.

These cream filled pastries are made all over Italy in honor of the saint but particularly in Sicily where today is also the tradition known as le tavole di San Giuseppe or the tables of St Joseph where 100 meatless dishes from antipasto to dessert are made in his honor. I was lucky enough to take a group to Salemi, Sicily to see this tradition first hand and my Sicilian grandmother also did the tables when I was a child. Viva San Giuseppe!
