Tips for Apple Season

September 30, 2026

Buy apples with smooth, shiny skin and that feel heavy in your hand.

Apples will keep longer if individually wrapped in paper and kept in the crisper drawer of your refrigerator.

Know the difference between baking and eating apples; ex. Cortland, Granny Smith, Rhode Island Greening are good for pies. Delicious, Honey Crisp and Fujii great for eating.

Save the apple peels to add to muffins, cakes and cookies. Use them in smoothies.

Freeze apple slices by arranging them in single layers on baking sheets to keep them loose and prevent a solid block from forming. Transfer slices to freezer in bags and take out what you need.

Toss apple slices with lemon or lime juice to prevent them turning brown.

Add chopped apples to your morning oatmeal.

Use a cheese grater to grate apples for baking and cooking.

Use an apple corer to eliminate core and seeds.

To prevent a runny apple pie, add a couple of tablespoons of cornstarch to the pie filling.
