Tomatoes and Zucchini Blossoms!
July 1, 2010

Sitting on my screened porch is a sun gold cherry tomato plant that is now as tall as the ceiling! It just produced its first orange, sugar cherry tomatoes! This is the earliest I have ever gotten ripe tomatoes! We have plenty more plants in the garden, all 80 of them just waiting in some warm days to coax that red blush on their green little faces. The zucchini are flourishing and they have huge flowers just perfect for Stuffing.
I picked Swiss chard, a variety called bright lights because of their colorful stems, a rainbow of colors from shocking pink to orange. The leaves are so big that they are perfect for stuffing and you can find a wonderful recipe for them on the Ciao Italia blog in the archives. If you have not done so yet in your own garden, lay down some straw between the rows to keep the weeding to a minimum. It’s a great time saver. I’ll give you another update on the garden in August, when I suspect I will have tons of ripe tomatoes if this hot weather continues its pattern.
